Travel

By air

We recommend flying to either London Heathrow airport or Southampton airport, since these offer the easiest and fastest connections to Winchester.

London Heathrow

Heathrow offers frequent connections to most countries. We recommend travelling to and from Heathrow by coach (bus). Coaches depart from Heathrow approximately every 2 hours, with a journey time of roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on airport terminal. Coaches are operated by National Express, and tickets can be bought in advance (recommended) from http://www.nationalexpress.com – be sure to select the right departure terminal. Coaches from terminals 1,2 and 3 depart from the Heathrow central bus station, while terminals 4 and 5 have their own bus stops. It is possible to buy a ticket from the National Express office at Heathrow, although please be aware that prices may be higher than on the website. Unfortunately National Express require you to book a ticket for a specific coach, and therefore if booking in advance you should allow at least 1 hour to pass through the airport from landing. For travel from Winchester to Heathrow you will need to buy (and probably print) a ticket in advance.

Southampton Airport

Southampton offers a much faster passage through the airport than Heathrow. If you can we recommend travelling to Southampton instead of Heathrow, although connections are limited, and flights to Heathrow may be cheaper. The dominant airline at Southampton is Flybe, which serves mostly UK and Irish cities, and tourist destinations within Europe. KLM flies between Southampton and Amsterdam, which may be a convenient transfer for you. Southampton airport has a mainline railway station (Southampton Airport Parkway), with frequent connections to Winchester. The journey time is under 10 minutes, and tickets cost less than £5. You can check train times at www.nationalrail.co.uk.

Other airports

It is possible to travel between other London airports (including Gatwick) and Winchester, although you will most likely need to change bus or train in central London, and may be required to transfer between railway stations on the tube (underground/metro/subway). For information about train and coach journeys please check www.nationalrail.co.uk and www.nationalexpress.co.uk. Trains for Winchester depart from London Waterloo railway station.

By train

Winchester is on the south coast mainline between London Waterloo and Southampton. There are frequent direct trains to Winchester from both of these stations, and stations in between. There is also a direct train to/from the north operated by Cross Country, which goes through Birmingham New Street, Oxford, and Reading. For information about train journeys please check www.nationalrail.co.uk.

By car

Please inform us if you would like to come by car. Parking may be limited, or even non-existent.

Arriving in Winchester

Coaches from Heathrow stop on The Broadway, close to the Guildhall. This is about 20 minutes walk to the conference accommodation. The railway station is 15 minutes walk from the accommodation and 10 minutes walk from the city centre. Taxis should be available at both the coach stop and railway station, and will cost ~£5-£10. Please see the map on the location page of this website.
